no it hasn't anything to do with the source engine, which is a game engine.
Open Source means that everyone can see the source code how the programm is written. In this case it is licensed as GPL, which is one of the most used open source licenses (e.g. by the linux kernel and the gnu stuff). It is now possible to fix some of the broken things in ET. Would be great to have fewer crashes .
